Beni Ourain vs M'rirt Rugs: What's the Difference?
Beni Ourain and M'rirt are the two Moroccan rug styles we make most often at Moroccowoven. Both are handmade from wool in Morocco, and both are made to order. The difference is in the feel of the rug: how thick it is, how dense the weave is, and how it looks on the floor. This page helps you choose.
Beni Ourain rugs
Beni Ourain rugs come from the Beni Ourain tribes of the Middle Atlas mountains. They are known for a thick, soft, plush pile, usually in natural ivory or cream wool with simple black or brown lines, often in a diamond pattern. They feel deep and cozy underfoot, which makes them a favorite for living rooms and bedrooms.
M'rirt rugs
M'rirt rugs also come from the Middle Atlas. The wool is knotted tighter and denser, so the rug feels velvety and a little flatter than a Beni Ourain, with a medium pile. The tighter weave keeps sharp detail, which is why M'rirt rugs often carry more detailed patterns and richer colors.

- Plush Pile: the thick, soft, Beni Ourain feel.
- Medium Pile: the denser, velvety, M'rirt feel.
- Low Pile: a flatter rug that suits entryways, dining areas and spaces where doors need to clear the rug.
