Care Guide
How to Care for
Your Rug
A Beni Ourain rug is built to last decades. With the right care, it only gets better with time.
Natural wool is one of the most resilient fibres in the world. It self-cleans, regulates moisture, and resists dirt naturally. What it needs from you is simple — consistency, not effort.
01
Weekly Vacuuming
Vacuum on the lowest suction setting, always in the direction of the pile. Never use a beater bar or rotating brush — it pulls the fibres and damages the knots over time. A simple pass once a week keeps dust from settling deep into the wool.
02
Rotate Every 6 Months
Foot traffic wears unevenly. Rotating your rug 180° every six months ensures even ageing across the surface and preserves the texture of the pile in high-traffic zones.
03
Spot Cleaning
Act immediately when spills happen. Blot — never rub — with a clean white cloth. Use cold water and a small amount of mild wool-safe soap if needed. Work from the outside of the stain inward. Rinse with cold water and let dry flat in a ventilated area.
04
Deep Cleaning — Once a Year
Once a year, take your rug to a professional rug cleaner who has experience with natural wool. Avoid standard dry cleaners. Ask specifically for hand-washing or cold-water cleaning methods. Never machine wash or tumble dry.
05
Sunlight
Natural dyes are beautiful but sensitive to prolonged UV exposure. Avoid placing the rug in direct sunlight for extended periods. If your space is very bright, rotate the rug regularly to prevent uneven fading.
06
Use a Rug Pad
Always place a non-slip rug pad underneath. It prevents movement, reduces wear from underneath, protects your floor, and adds comfort underfoot. It also allows air circulation which keeps the wool healthy.
07
Storage
If you need to store your rug, roll it — never fold it. Folding creates permanent creases in the fibres. Roll it pile-side in, wrap in breathable cotton or linen, and store flat or upright in a dry, ventilated space. Avoid plastic wrapping which traps moisture.
